Prayers For Sandy Hook/Newton

Connecticut School Shooting

Even though I have not posted in a long while…I am personally saddened by this tragedy that occurred in Newton, Connecticut. My thoughts and prayers go out to the educators’ and the children’s families. It breaks  my heart to see and hear about innocent children dying. What has this country…No no…what has this WORLD GONE TO? This is a violent world and I’ll step out of my sports scene if I had to…it’s no one but the devil himself slowly trying to destroy our world that the good Lord created. Now I won’t get into religious talk, but I what I will ask is for those to put your thoughts and prayers to their families. Hearing about the Aurora shooting, the Columbine shooting from years ago, and others…makes me wonder: What can we do to change this? My fiancee is an educator and the last thing I need to hear or see is that she was taken out by an idiot shooter. IT’S THE LAST THING! I love her and would be so devastated without her. We need to get back to loving!!! Meanwhile, I pray for the two gunmen and their families…yeah one died and they were idiots but they still need prayer and they still need love. You probably won’t feel the same way I feel but they need it too. I PROMISE YOU!

Can Federer Make The ATP World Tour Finals??

Posted in Sports with tags , , on November 8, 2012 by nthezonestl1977

OK so it’s not a grand slam tennis event and it is in London this year but should it be in South Africa. A country that is beautiful, adventurous, and has its racial and status segregation issues from what a friend tells me.  London already has Wimbledon, why not spread the World Tour back around the world! Anyways, let’s break this Roger Federer and David Ferrer final down. As the Beastie Boys’ say “Let the beat umm drop”. A low heartbeat publicity event here in the states by no means should make this worldwide rather upbeat awesome year end tennis event un-talked about.

Federer is coming off a disappointing early exit from the U.S. Open looks to get his indoor game back. Ferrer covers so much ground side to side. But what’s even more impressive is how he does this as such a short athlete. The Spaniard tennis great has taken the country of Spain by storm especially after his fellow countryman Rafael Nadal went down with an injury earlier in the year missing two grand slams. David Ferrer pronounced in English “Day Veeed”  has a chance to lose 14 times in a row, but this should make for a very brilliant match. However, this round-robin event is not a single elimination, and will be a lot of fun to see the players continue on even after a loss and how they handle the adversity on the court.

If Federer defeats Ferrer, he will become the first player to book his place in the last four Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Federer defeated Tsonga in last year’s ATP World Tour Finals 2011 Final and should have no problem recovering from his multiple finals “babelaas babbelas” or  hangovers from English championships .

THE A-TRAIN RANT 8.0!!!

Posted in Baseball, Basketball, Football, Sports with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 30, 2012 by A-Train

It’s been such a long time since I have ranted that I might just do a HUGE rant for this one! But let’s go!

This rant is sponsored by…

THE ANGRY REDBIRD!!

  1. Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants winning their 2nd championship in 3 years. How sad it was for Miguel Cabrera who has just recently suffered the Carlos Beltran Syndrome. The Carlos Beltran Syndrome was made in 2006 after Beltran struck out in the 2006 NLCS freezing on a called third strike that ended that series. When you get frozen on a third strike to end a World Series…everything that was done that season almost meant nothing. Sorry Mr. Triple Crown.
  2. Pablo Sandoval isn’t in the same league as Albert Pujols, Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson. But what he did in Game 1 was better than all 3. And I hate that. That’s just the homer in me.
  3. St. Louis Rams fans should be satisfied about the 3-5 record, forget what happened against New England in London. Yeah they gave up a couple of games and should have a winning record…but remember these are the Rams.
  4. Steven Jackson should be traded…time to give up the golden goose. YEAH I SAID IT. Tired of defending this dude.
  5. Sam Bradford finally has an offensive coordinator that will be back next season. Just need to work on the…offense.
  6. Jerry Jones needs to give up his job as general manager of Dallas. Tony Romo needs to give up his starting job as quarterback. Does the name Marc Bulger ring a bell? Jason Garrett needs to just be an offensive coordinator.
  7. Atlanta Falcons are 7-0. Guess what? BIG DEAL. Win a game in the playoffs, then you can celebrate. While you sitting there saying that I’m a hater. Let me put some truth in your minds. Last two playoff games the Falcons played, they lost to the Super Bowl winner. Having one of the first round byes doesn’t get a team to the Super Bowl…teams that constantly play get you there. Don’t believe me…ask the last two champions.
  8. If Lance Armstrong is banned from cycling, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa need to be banned from baseball.
  9. Stephen A. Smith did not say the N-word…meaning he’ll keep his job on First Take.
  10. Cari Champion is the sexiest sportscaster on TV. Find me one better. And I’ll disagree with you.
  11. No hockey, sorry fans. You got the hardwood or the gridiron. Suck it up.

Well so much for the huge rant…might do another one this week. Stay tuned. Some NBA is in store…The Association coming soon.

A Few Questions…with Sarah Estopare

Posted in Football, Special, Sports with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 27, 2012 by A-Train

IT’S TIME FOR ANOTHER EDITION OF “A Few Questions…” and on this edition, I want to introduce a young woman, born and raised in St. Louis, gearing up to become one of the first quarterbacks for the brand new expansion St. Louis Saints of the Lingerie Football League. She is Sarah Estopare (ES-TOE-PAR-AY).

A-TRAIN: How are you doing today?

SARAH: I’m doing great!

A-TRAIN: How long have you been a football fan?

SARAH: For as long as I can remember – Watching the Sunday games with my dad and little brother and learning from them are always some of my favorite memories!

A-TRAIN: Very interesting. How did you learn of the Lingerie Football League?

SARAH: I saw the first game I ever watched on MTV2 and thought to myself, “I need to be doing that.”

A-TRAIN: Is that so…well, stated that you are a QB, what have you learned so far playing the position?

SARAH: I’ve learned that you’re the leader out there and you control the momentum of the game. It’s one of the coolest, yet challenging positions I’ve ever played.

A-TRAIN: You think you got a better arm than (St. Louis Rams QB) Sam Bradford?

SARAH: Haha, not sure about that, but I can hold my own!and I love it!

A-TRAIN: How will you feel when you walk out on the field for the very first game?

SARAH: I think I’ll feel everything that I’ve been working for, hardwork, dedication, pain all coming together at once and it will be one of the coolest feelings ever. It’ll give me goosebumps!

A-TRAIN: How about when you know that you will be on TV?

SARAH: That’s just a bonus! I’ll take it!

A-TRAIN: What is your goal with the League?

SARAH: To win games and head to that All Star Game to rep my state!

A-TRAIN: Alright, so the important question is…NFL or LFL?

SARAH: I’ll be honest with you – NFL. I like watching the pro QB’s do their thing.

A-TRAIN: Wow! Any other sports you like?

SARAH: BASEBALL!!!

A-TRAIN: Is this what you watch the most?

SARAH: Baseball is a huge passion of mine.

A-TRAIN: Are you single?

SARAH: I am single at the moment.

A-TRAIN: I’ll leave that alone. (Looks away) So, do you like your hometown teams?

SARAH: I love my hometown teams – Cards, Blues and Rams…but I love the New York Yankees – so much history and culture behind the team!

A-TRAIN: YANKEES???  I think I want to vomit. Just kidding. But are your favorite athletes?

SARAH: I got a few: Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, Tom Brady, David Freese, Ray Lewis, and Kobe Bryant.

A-TRAIN: Top 5 artists that you are listening to?

SARAH: Tough question, as I love my music! Huge country fan… Lady Antebellum, Kenny Chesney, when I’m not listening to country..Al Green, Mariah Carey and Chicago.

A-TRAIN: Interesting choices. Top 5 TV shows you watch?

SARAH: I’m mainly watching sports, ESPN, but I’ll still watch the old sitcoms like Friends, which is my favorite show, as far as reality tv goes, I like Khloe and Lamar.

(A-TRAIN screams in terror)

A-TRAIN: Ok, any shoutouts that you want to give out?

SARAH: A tremendous shoutout to my amazing family – Mom, Dad, Maggie and Tommy you guys are the greatest. My grandparents, my best friend Falon and all of my guy friends out there!

A-TRAIN: I know you’re doing social media…where can they follow you?

SARAH: @SarahEstopare on Twitter and Sarah Estopare LFL Facebook page.

A-TRAIN: Thanks for taking some time out for this interview.

SARAH: Thanks so much for doing this!

A-TRAIN: You bet. I wish nothing but the best of luck to you and your brand new team.

SARAH: I appreciate that!

A-TRAIN: I will be watching you on TV, without a doubt. Low key, I like the LFL! And that was Sarah Estopare, QB of the St. Louis Saints you can catch her next season, and if you miss the games, you can watch them on MTV2, more to come! Go to their official website as well: http://www.lflus.com/stlouissaints/

LEAVE ALBERT ALONE…THANK YOU!

Posted in Baseball, Football, Sports with tags , , , , , , , , , on October 18, 2012 by A-Train

Ok, people of St. Louis! SERIOUSLY! SHUT UP ABOUT ALBERT! All of this constant derogatory bashing about him is really getting old. Even though I can appreciate a good joke (If I see one), but the man did what he was supposed to do. The Cardinals’ front office where doing what they were going to do. Which is…NOT PAY HIM! So don’t get upset at him when he was supposed to get a well-deserved paycheck from the team that he helped in 11 seasons get to 3 World Series and earn 2 championships. Funny though, I haven’t heard the same damn mess about Jack Clark, Mark McGwire, Will Clark (in his brief time), and other superstars that have left the Cardinals to go to other teams. Give “the mang” his respect! Some of the media IN OUR AREA is dogging the crapola out of him…FOR WHAT? What did he do to you, except leave.

I have learned in sports that loyalty from athletes is pretty much dead. You will hardly ever see an athlete for a particular team play with the same team for their entire career. Steven Jackson of the St. Louis Rams is a good example…but even I don’t believe he’ll be around next season. Athletes are trying to better themselves just like you and I. Yep, we are the ones that pay their contracts. If that’s the case, we wouldn’t go to the sporting events or wouldn’t watch the games. But guess what, we do. We’re stuck and have to get over that.

Albert performed very well here in St. Louis. Granted to you hardcore baseball fans that love the little things, Albert didn’t do those things as good as you hoped. Believe it or not, those fans knew what they were getting when he made the team back in 2001. He was a decent base runner, terrible outfielder, and (in my opinion) crapola 3rd baseman. Played 1st base and became a much better fielder. Now, you can’t sit here and tell me his offensive numbers weren’t amazing. Tell me the last time a man of his caliber hit .300, 30 HR, and 100 RBIs in 10 consecutive seasons. I’LL WAIT. Remind you, he did this for the Cardinals. Not the Yankees. Not the Red Sox. Not even the Cubs. Something that not even, as the old-timers and most fans love the most, Stan “The Man” Musial ever did. He did this for the “best fans in baseball.”

My point is, just respect the guy. Whatever he did outside of the game is his business. If he treated you indifferently then that was on you, innocent or not. I never got a chance to meet him, sorry, I wasn’t blessed with opportunities. That’s life, I got over it. So can you, the irate Cardinal fan. Yeah you can stick it to him that he’s not in the postseason or he had an off year, but trust and believe, he’ll be back and until then I’ll cheer for the man. Because he is still a great player and I enjoyed his time here. I can’t wait till the day he returns to STL…whether you boo or cheer, I’ll stand up and applaud (in my opinion) the BEST CARDINAL EVER. I SAID IT! Cards management…YOU RUINED IT!

A Few Questions…with Allen Schatz

Posted in Baseball, Football, Hockey, NFL, Special, Sports with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on October 17, 2012 by A-Train

Time now for another edition of “A Few Questions…” and joining me today on this edition is an author from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has written three fictional baseball novels and is avid Philly sports fan…his name is Allen Schatz.

A-TRAIN: How are  you doing today?

ALLEN: I’m great.

A-TRAIN: Alright. Let’s get to the questions. So who or what inspired you to become a writer?

ALLEN: I’m not sure there is a singular inspiration. I heard more than a few times over the years that “you should be a writer”, but for a variety of reasons, I just never got around to it. In 2008, my work situation changed and the opportunity (read: time!) arose and I jumped at it.

A-TRAIN: So looking at your title character, Marshall Connors, where did the name come from?

ALLEN: “Marshall” was the first name my son Michael almost had. My wife and I chickened out on that, but I’ve always had that name stuck in my head so I ran with it. The “Connors” part was random, mostly because it sounded good.

A-TRAIN: How did you determine what kind of life/occupation that Marshall would have?

ALLEN: Marshall is the “me” I never was. He is an extension of me, an alter ego if you will. At one point, I had considered pursuing becoming a professional baseball umpire, but circumstances changed and it didn’t happen. I have been an amateur umpire, however, for the better part of 30 years. I also wanted to make the lead character unique. An umpire is not something one thinks of as an “everyday hero” type profession.

A-TRAIN: You being an amateur umpire, did you incorporate some of your life experiences in your character?

ALLEN: As noted above, yes. My experiences are included in a number of ways. Marshall’s job, where his parents live, the settings for many of the scenes; these are all “real” things from my life. I think it adds to the story by having places and things people can “see” from reality.

A-TRAIN: How many series of books do you plan to write with this character Marshall?

ALLEN: There are no specific plans. A fourth book is in the early stages. Originally, it was not going to be with Marshall, but because of reader interest and requests, I’m changing it to be another in the series.

A-TRAIN: Any plans on adapting your novels to TV or movies?

ALLEN: More than a few readers have suggested these would make fun movies, and I’ve had some thoughts about it, but no definite plans. I have done a little screenwriting and may give converting the first or third book into a screenplay a try and shop it around.

A-TRAIN: Knowing that you are a big baseball fan…is there a baseball player…past or present…that you always wanted to add to one of your novels?

ALLEN: The fourth book has Babe Ruth references. So, yes!

A-TRAIN: You ever thought about writing novels for other sports?

ALLEN: Possibly… but baseball is my first love, so not sure I will. If I did, ice hockey might be next, although some have suggested soccer.

A-TRAIN: Ok, enough serious questions…let’s have some fun. Is that ok?

ALLEN: Fun is good!

A-TRAIN: Who gets in the World Series?

ALLEN: I was pulling for either the O’s or A’s, but both of them went out early. Of the final four, the Tigers are the team that least annoys me, so we’ll say Tigers v. Cardinals with Tigers winning.

A-TRAIN: Do you have any favorite teams outside of the Philly teams? Or that you follow?

ALLEN: Nope. That would be sacrilegious!

A-TRAIN: Thoughts about the NHL lockout?

ALLEN: It is sad. Neither side seems to remember the damage they did from the lost season several years ago. Many fans went away and aren’t ever coming back. The lifelong fans, like me, are now getting stepped on (again). We’ve put up with a lot of crap in the league (bad expansion, bad rules, bad referees, bad management), but like with baseball, we enjoy the game and want to see good hockey. It’s just a shame they can’t consider that.

A-TRAIN: Seeing that you are from Philly, do you think the Eagles need to get rid of Michael Vick? Andy Reid? (state why…)

ALLEN: #FireAndy – and invent a time machine to do it years ago. I don’t think Vick is any worse or better than any other option that would be underperforming with Reid around. I like to say they are good enough to be annoying, but they won’t ever win the Super Bowl… and even less likely to do so with Reid.

A-TRAIN: Where were you when the final out was recorded from the 1980 World Series? (response) How about the 2008 series?

ALLEN:

1980 – I was at Ridley Bowl, finishing up my third game in the league I was in. We were bowling, running to the TV, repeat for the entire game. It was awesome.

2008 – I was in a chair in my living room. It was probably a little more awesome because my son was watching (from his home in L.A.) and we got to celebrate together at the parade.

A-TRAIN: Last thing…your Top 5 TV shows you watch?

ALLEN:  Let’s go with this: 1) Big Bang (Theory) 2) Modern Family 3) How I Met Your Mother 4) Fringe 5) Parks and Recreation

A-TRAIN: Interesting choices. Alright. Where can they find you?

ALLEN: I’m on Twitter: @raschatz

I’m on Facebook: www.facebook.com/AllenSchatzWriting

I have a website: www.allenschatz.com

Google me too… you’ll get a lot of hits.

A-TRAIN: Where can they find your books?

ALLEN: Everywhere books are sold online. The full list is on my website: www.allenschatz.com/wherebuy.html – the books are available for Kindle, Nook, iPhone, iPad, and many other devices. They are also available in paperback.

A-TRAIN: Any shoutouts you want to give?

ALLEN: I’d like to thank all the fans I’ve developed over the past couple of years. I’ve met some good people via Twitter and FB interactions, present company included. Someday, I hope to meet more of them in person.

A-TRAIN: Thank you so much for your time today.

ALLEN: Thanks for having me. I appreciate it.

Remember to check out his books including the very first one…

The A-Train signing off. More interviews to come.

THIS A-TRAIN RANT IS SPONSORED BY…

THE ANGRY REDBIRD!

  1. Peyton Manning is the best QB of all-time…the hell with Brett Favre. After a comeback like that with a not so great team. He can damn near do anything.
  2. Matt Holliday, Jon Jay and Yadier Molina need to learn how to hit in the playoffs. A few instructional videos with Fred McGriff shouldn’t hurt. Don’t act like you don’t remember those.
  3. Jeff Fisher did a good thing on Sunday with Greg The Leg, trying for him to kick a (would have been record) 66-yard field goal. If he knows he can kick, what the hell else do you supposed to do on 4th down.
  4. Speaking of that Rams game, Sam Bradford needs to learn the 2-minute drill, and when to throw the football IMMEDIATELY. It costs the Rams a much needed road win.
  5. The Rams should be at least 5-1. YEAH, I SAID IT. Detroit and Miami should have been road wins. Unclear about that Chicago game but at least they should have been in the lead for those games. Tough breaks in those losses.
  6. Who in the hell is this Richard Sherman guy from Seattle? For a guy who hasn’t seen a postseason yet, he sure thinks he  has the right to go tell off to a Super Bowl-winning QB that he is better than him. Get a championship first, then talk trash. Learn something from Gary Payton, even if it means going to another team to get it.
  7. Speaking of RGIII…I think he is finally learning what the NFL is like. After a mild concussion last week…Dude, they are just getting started with you.
  8. Speaking of Washington D.C., the Washington Nationals front office do not want to win any championships. If that’s the case, they should all be fired. NEXT SEASON!!
  9. The San Francisco Giants are no punks, they got to the NLCS for a reason. This is about to be (hopefully) a great NLCS, funny though how 2 things surface from this matchup. 1) 25 years ago, these two teams played to a thrilling 7-game series with the Cardinals, with the Cardinals winning that before losing to the Minnesota Twins in the Fall Classic. 2) These 2 teams are the last 2 champions, interesting to see who gets there again.
  10. NBA season is around the corner, NHL season is down in the dumps. Last year, it was the other way around.
  11. I don’t feel sorry for the New York Yankees. I’m a long-time hater and I don’t care. Feel sorry for Derek Jeter though. Looks like (as a friend put it) BALCO East needs to break out the juice for another comeback.
  12. The New York Giants are the best team in the NFC, until someone knocks them off, no one else is better. PERIOD. Just ask the San Francisco 49ers.
  13. Back to the Rams…they scored more points the 49ers did. Take that San Fran!
  14. Philip Rivers and Tony Romo are the same people…Yet, I think both are trying to fire their offensive head coaches. Shame on you!
  15. I’ll miss Ray Lewis…that man is cursed. He got in that Madden game again and now he won’t even play the rest of the season. I hope it’s not the last one. If so, this is a bad way to go out. Very bad way.
  16. I got at least 1 win in fantasy football this week, and that I didn’t have a full team with that.

Coming up, a Q/A interview with author Allen Schatz and hopefully get one of the ladies from the Lingerie Football League’s St. Louis Saints.

Stay tuned.
